Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 1/17/09
The extreme cold made the latter part of this week a little to uncomfortable for me. I fished Monday through Wednesday with about 4 to 6 hours on the water each day. I quite frankly was surprised and encouraged that the bite was as good as it was over those short few days. I fished mainly in the upper part of the mid lake area, the fish weren't everywhere but when you found them you got a consistent bite for a good hour at a time.
The water was still pretty muddy but there was mud lines that seemed to hold fish, especially if you saw bait activity in or around the mud line breaks. The activity when we found them was good, it would last for 40 to 60 minutes and then you would have to move on and find another active area. We managed to put 13 to 17 bass each time on the water; the size for me wasn't great with the bigger fish each day only around 3 pounds maybe a little more.
The baits I fished this week, seemed to produce in spurts. When they hit rattle baits you would catch several, when that turned off we went to Punisher Spinner baits they would produce for an hour or so and we would change again. We had a time where Secret Weapon Recoil rigs (drop shots) produced baited with Mister Twister Comida's; we fished these in 12 to 15 feet of water around grass. Lastly when it seemed slow we turned to jerk baits over 10 to 12 ft. of water.
Not a bad week, I suspect with the cold we are going through will slow the fishing and take a few days of warm to get the fish back moving. This next 2 weeks I will be at the Huntsville and Chattanooga boat shows helping Stratos, I will be fishing some in-between, I hope to see you there.
I have days available, and am booking for 2009, please call for details!
