Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 1/3/09
The holidays are just about over and I should be spending more time on the water than I have been. I only fished a couple of days this past week and had mixed results from the short fishing week. We also had completely different weather both days and this could certainly have caused mixed results. One day was nice and warm and very little wind while the other was windy, cold and not very nice.
I spent the first day up river, working some traditional areas that over the years have turned on in early winter; the other I was more to the mid part of the lake. Both days I fished 3 to 10 feet type structure, working points, creeks edges and hidden roadbeds. The early part of the week the water was extremely muddy and I felt that must have affected the bite as we struggled to find good numbers of fish. As the week went on the water showed some clearing, at least enough to feel comfortable that you can get a bite. We caught 30 fish on the second day, finding them very active, chasing bait and hitting several types of baits. We caught fish on Punishers Spinner Baits rolling it down about 8 feet of water and just letting it tick the bottom. We also had some luck on rattle baits working them across points and down grass edges. Lastly we caught fish on Secret Weapon Recoil Rigs, they were rigged with Mister Twister worms fished over the grass in about 5 feet of water with a 2-foot drop shot recoil leader and weight hook to a swivel and hook above. Great action and caught good fish.
