Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 1/8/11
A number of things this past week contributed to some tough days on the water, early in the week we had some extremely high water for Lake Guntersville. Somewhere in the 596 ft elevation; which put the tops of boat docks nearly under water? Then after the water level came back down to more normal elevation the wind picked up and caused some tough fishing conditions when trying to hold your position over structure. All said we certainly struggled, coming up with any consistent pattern this past week.
We fished several baits and only found a few things successful, we worked Punisher Spinner baits over the top of the grass in 8 foot of water, and we fished Tight-Line jigs along long deep points and twitched jerk baits along grass edges and over grass bottoms. Nothing really produced but the few fish we did catch were caught on jerk baits, the key however was a long pause and a lot of patients. The one bait we did not fish that I believe should have worked was a Carolina rig; we just never could hold ourselves in the depth it would have taken for the bait to produce.
It will be tough for another few weeks and hopefully as spring moves in around the middle of February we should be all over some great and consistent fishing by then. Until them we will keep plugging away at the winter bite looking for that one monster that makes the elements worth it!
