Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 5/23/09
You know the way the fish have been biting that it had to slow down, unfortunately this past week it finally did. We have had now 6 days in a row with cool nights and or east and northeast winds. The bass feed one day fairly well and other than that we struggled all week to get on a consistent pattern. We should be strong into a top water pattern by now but the lack of grass that has actually surfaced to the top has really hurt the top water bite.
The times we did catch fish this week was still on a Punisher Spinner Bait bite, in watermelon, ghost or royal shad color; sizes ranged from ½ oz. to 1 oz. depending on the skill level of the angler. When they were hitting the spinner bait was the most consistent pattern all week. We did have a few times when Mister Twister big worms in watermelon red seed color produced fairly well. My best activity continued to be up river, the mid part of the river had some times that we did ok but most of my bites came up river.
I believe that if we can get back into some summer time patterns with warm mornings and light winds then I believe the fish will start back hitting a variety of baits and fishing should pick up again. They should spread the lake and be fairly consistent throughout the summer, with strong morning and afternoon activity and deep patterns in midday.
Come fish with me I have days available to fish with you!
