Freshies Report "Flat Head Cats"
For those freshwater fishermen that want a big pull I suggest targeting flat head cats. They are big fish and once hooked are determined to get back to the safety of the structure. It's my opinion that this fish likes to stay where it feels safe, eats what it wants, and while you are trying to catch this fish "big is most likely what you are going to get!" The reason being if you were a small fish you certainly wouldn't be hanging around an area with these big cats, because they will eat you. My father use to say, "If it fits in their mouth and is on their "want to eat list" a big flathead cat will inhale it!"
Flatheads aren't scavengers meaning they have their own special diet. This is one fish that is a very efficient predator that prefers live food, especially fish and crayfish. So therefore when targeting the largest flat head out there go with the most preferred bait, which are…gizzard shad, sunfish, suckers, white perch, and other catfish! If all this fails and you want more of a "hands on" situation, I suggest "Going Noodling!" More on my version of this fishing sport in next week's report!
