Summer time is here and in full swing. Temps are getting well into the nineties and the mullet schools are scattered across the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon. This means that we will be seeing an influx of summer species topped off by the much sought after Silver King. Small tarpon are already being seen in the area canals and creeks and soon the larger tarpon will be following the bait into the north River and Mosquito Lagoon.

Redfish are back to schooling up in their normal areas after the rise of water levels from our winter season. Getting on the water early is a must if you want to find tailing fish or looking to get some amazing top-water action. The bite as of lately has been tough on artificial baits so keep a rod with twenty inches of leader tied to a Daiichi Bleeding Bait circle hook with a half crab or chunk mullet to cast to the fish just incase they snub their nose at your plastics or plugs. We have been fishing with spooks in the morning for some great trout and redfish explosions and as soon as the sun breaks the horizon we have been switching to Exude saltwater RT Slug in the colors "Morning Glory" and "Golden Bream." These lures have some great action when paired with a Daiichi Copperhead 2/0 and will entice all the different varieties of fish available to strike.

A special note: You have two opportunities this month to win a free fishing charter in the Mosquito Lagoon with me Capt. Mike Ortego "The Florida Fisherman". The first opportunity is by sending in your favorite fishing or hunting picture to BattenOutdoors.com presented by Larry the Cable Guy. The winning entry will win a six hour fishing trip with me and Greg Batten the host of the radio show Batten Outdoors that can be heard on 740 am The Game in central Florida on Saturday mornings from 10-12. The winner will be announced on the show this Saturday May 16th.

The second opportunity is at the silent auction at the School Wish Foundation Drive for Excellence Golf Tournament on May 30, 2009, the School Wish Foundation is an organization attending to the needs of schools in Florida.
