Capt. Rich had a pretty great week on the Gulf Star. We had a mid-week charter, fishing ok, not fantastic. Some of the highlights of that trip were a large 12lb. African Pompano (photo in the gallery), catching their limit of yellow tail snapper and nice size kingfish.
This weekend's regular scheduled 44hr Middle Grounds trip took 11 anglers, the weather was perfect and the fishing was even better! They whacked ‘em!! The boat caught its limit of large mangrove snapper, red grouper, a lot of very nice red snapper, 17 king mackerel, 20 gags up to 20lbs., a whole mess of vermillion snapper & porgies. Mixed in were barracuda and sharks, which were all released. A marine biologist from the FWC was onboard as well, he made measurements and documented all released fish, including over 50 red grouper (many were keeper size).
By Sunday morning enough Amberjacks were caught to literally top off the fish boxes. The crew & Capt. Rich can't wait until this weekend to do it all over again…fishing was RED HOT!
Mike Dodich won the pool with an American red snapper weighing in at 12lbs. The Von Herbulis family did some good fishing as well! Eric took the grouper pool with a 15lb gag and Michael snagged himself a great looking 35lb AJ!
The crew reported that Capt. Rich had a chance at 6 VERY LARGE gag groupers and HACKED THEM ALL! Apparently he didn't think anyone was watching him fish the bow!
Finally, George sends out a huge thanks to Rumblefish, Inc. in Pompano Beach, FL! They were kind enough to send him a 2 foot custom underwater light (Swordlight) with green and white bulbs. The amount of bait this light attracted resulted in tons of kingfish action! 17 were landed but another 30 or so were lost due to cut offs. George says that WIRE rigs and the Swordlight will definitely be in the future for Gulf Star trips!
