Fort Lauderdale Fishing with Top Shot Sportfishing Charter Boat and Capt. Zsak
John and Becky VanKanegan from Georgia along with their nephew, Danny, from Indiana were vacationing in Fort Lauderdale and decided to charter the Top Shot Sportfishing Charter Boat team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at Bahia Mar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316.
Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore. We started out trolling with two #8 plainers, one with a blue and white sea witch and the other with a pink and blue sea witch, both with double hooked Bonito strips. For surface baits we went with two Bonito strips and two Ballyhoos.
We trolled the reefs, zigzagging in and out north of Fort Lauderdale from 80 ft. out to 180 ft. of water. All the anglers took turns reeling in their catches – a total of five Bonitos and seven Kingfish.
After steady action while trolling and with a nice box full of fish, I decided to go into deeper waters looking for larger fish. We stopped in 350 ft. of water which has a deep-water wreck - a good area to fish. We put out a kite with two live baits and waited for its arrival. A Hammerhead Shark on the surface swam towards the bait and ate it – FISH ON. John was the angler and did a great job fighting the Shark. The fish pulled lots of drag, and John worked the Shark getting the line back. Once the Shark was alongside of the boat, we got the hooks out, pictures were taken and the Hammerhead Shak was released to fight again. Then all of a sudden, the bottom rod went off and we had a fish on. Danny was the angler and hopped into the chair – we strapped him in and Danny began his battle with another Hammerhead Shark. After a great fight, we got the hooks out, a quick photo and the Shark was released.
For the last part of the trip, we tried Snapper fishing in 100 ft. of water. Using a multiple hook Snapper rig with fresh cut bait and with some luck, we caught a dozen Yellow Tail Snappers.
It was now time to head back to the dock. The anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316, while watching the plasma TV.
