The last week or so has given up a few great trips, and a few okay outings. This is the norm for mid summer. The offshore scene has been dominated by Bonita (Little Tunny) and Kingfish (King Mackerel). Live bait fishing a mile or two outside the inlet has produced the most action. At times the Bonita hit every rod out at the same time and really warmed things up. The Dolphin (Dorado/Mahi-Mahi) bite has slowed a bit. They are further offshore and scattered. If you have the time and fuel budget you might get into them, or at least one good size one.

I stopped at the inlet a few times to try my luck with the smaller rods. This week, again, produced an awesome Snook bite. It was high noon and we just released a nice Cuda when a Kayaker snorkling called us over. He informed me that there were hundreds of Snook under him. We politley waited for him the swim away and pitched a few live baits out. The bite was instant. We ended up releasing 7 fish and had another 5 or 6 on in a 15 minute time frame. I had a similar trip a few weeks ago. It is closed season so we took a few photos and put them back quickly. I started guiding back in the mid 80's, mostly inshore, and this is the best Snook action I can remember in the Fort Lauderdale area, with the sun up!

Til next time,

Sea Ya,

Captain Ron Mallet
