Capt. Tom DePersia of Bigfish II Charters out of Marshfield, Massachusetts reports a spectacular week of fishing on Stellwagen Bank and adjacent waters. The first giant bluefin tuna of the season was landed Wednesday on the Bigfish III by the Mark Simpson party of Pembroke, MA. The party took this 620 lb. giant tuna in 35 minutes using live 10 lb. bluefish as bait. Four other giants were taken that day in the same area. Most of the giants have been 600 lbs. to over 1,000 lbs. and were taken by kite fishing with live 10-15 lb. bluefish as bait.
School tuna fishing has also been outstanding this week with lots of 60 lb. to 210 lb. school bluefins. All were taken on 30-50 lb. stand-up gear trolling squid rigs. The Steve Sandstron party of Bristol, CT caught 6 tuna keeping three fish from 65 lbs. to 205 lbs. The Todd Snyder party of Fairlawn, NJ caught 7 fish keeping three from 60 lbs to
185 lbs. and the Don Kemp party of Crownsville, MD caught 7 fish keeping their limit up to 150 lbs. They also caught plenty of cod, haddock etc. on the second ½ of their trip.
Cod/haddock fishing has also been great this week on Stellwagen Bank with the biggest cod of 51 lbs. taken by Gary Zahacenski of Torrington, CT. Most cod taken this week were 10-20 lbs. with some bigger fish. All trips also caught a lot of haddock, cusk, pollack, and wolffish.
Striped bass fishing has also been hot with most trips catching limits of 10-20 lb. bass and enough bluefish to wear off customer's arms. Shark fishing has been slow but should improve as water temperatures get warmer.
