An extremely cold winter and correspondingly cold water temperatures wreaking havok on the migratory patterns of many pelagic fish has left Fort Pierce & Treasure Coast anglers perplexed by the lack of good dolphin fishing in late April and early May.
Having assured my charter customers for the past four weeks that mahi season is just around the corner, I am left looking like a dope as this widely sought after fish refrains from making any kind of substantive appearance in our waters.
The odd catch of a few nice dolphin in recent weeks has led many anglers to expect decent catches offshore of St Lucie and Fort Pierce Inlets, but the fact is that there are very few mahi to be seen on a day to day basis.
Every day brings the possibility of a dolphin bonanza 'soon to appear', but wizened captains are not holding their breath nor are they predicting the arrival of the imfamous 'dorado' on a next day basis.
The Last Mango crew has been triumphant in our effort to provide action on the high seas with strong catches of both grouper and amberjack on a daily basis throughout April and May. Kingfish, golden tilefish and occasional catches of mai have supplemented our botom fishing effort on the Mango, but a good dolphin bite in the weeks to come would be a profound blessing for all local anglers. Let's see what happens!
Cheers Mateys
