Heat Wave Hits Alabama For the First Time This Year!

That should be this weekend's head lines as air temperatures are expected to reach the 70 degree mark by Sunday!

This week fishing with Reeds Guide Service/we had two really good trips to Alabama's Guntersville lake. If you call catching over a dozen bass exceeding 5 pounds each, a really good trip!

Trip # 1

The first trip we saw water temps around 45 degrees on a cold, 25 degree morning. The high that day was only 45 degrees.

Coupled with an entire day featuring no sunshine and 5-10 m.p.h. northerly winds, it was a brutal day. But we did catch some nice bass!

This trip was with 2 very nice young anglers from South Carolina practicing for an upcoming tournament this weekend. They didn't even feel the cold.

In all they had 13 chunky keepers with two 4 pounders and a 5 pounder. Five best bass would have weighed close to 18 pounds. Not a bad day in any anglers eyes. Including some nice, fat 2-3 pounders.

All bass came in 3 feet of water, all were caught on various types of half ounce, rattling lipless lures like; chrome/blue back rattle traps, and Rayburn red traps, Red eye shad, and chrome/black back Rapala Rattlin' Raps.

We used 17-20 pound test monofilament and florocarbon line, fished on ABU Garcia Reels on 6-7 foot rods.

Changing out all front and back hooks on these lures to a #4 Gamakatsu treble hook, meant very few lost bass.

*Note - It took a slow retrieve, with all lures on both of these trips.

Trip #2

Just recently, has the lake's water temperature rose to almost the 50 degree mark. By this time next week it could be close to 60 degrees! We need those warm days and nights to bring it up.

We fished another day this week with some really good bites on a variety of lures, on a nice sunny, mid 50 degree day.

We had 25 bass that day! Some were over 5 pounds each on this fantastic trip, fishing the mid to lower lake creeks!

Where else can you catch bass like these right now!

This included a 7 pounder, another that was close to 7 pounds, two 6 pounders and 3 close to 5-5 1/2 pounds each! All fat and slap full of eggs.

Our five best bass weighed close to 30 pounds! An incredible day, losing only two bass!

Unlike the previous trip, on this trip we had some really big bass, some weighing up to 7 pounds! And they were caught on other lures...besides the lipless ones!

White 1/2 ounce spinnerbaits, shad colored suspending jerk baits, pearl colored flukes, and we had two 5 pounders, caught back to back.

Both of those fat, female bass were caught, on a shallow running pearl colored, fat free shad crankbait (OK the lemon lime color didn't work this time!), with both caught on a small creek point in 3 feet of water.

We also had a few 3-4 pound bass on a 3/8 ounce black, brown and blue 3/8 ounce Davis jig, w/black Yamamoto crayfish trailer (featuring blue pinchers) / jig combo. What a variety!

All that was lacking was some good topwater bites...and their coming! Possibly next week!

I would make plans to throw some topwaters like Zara Spooks or Sammies, buzz baits and frogs, all next week! All spring! These bass have not seen many topwater lures this year!

On heavy line of course!

As owner of Reeds Guide Service, Guntersville lake's oldest, professional "bass fishing only" guide service, let me show you how to fool some of the lake's biggest bass this spring season!

Over the past 40 plus years of guiding on massive Guntersville lake I've seen dozens of my clients (some that come here from all over the world), catch some monster-sized bass. Some weighing from 10-14 pounds!

Let the next one be you!
