It was the way fishing used to be in Alabama during the winter in February! Air temps of 70 degrees and water temps near 60 degrees had Guntersville lake bass on the move...shallow.
Now, with this weekends predicted lows near 20 degrees anglers should prepare for a major change. Or just stay home until later next week!
Again, next Friday is predicted to be near the mid 60's! Followed by another winter warming trend. Boy, will those bass be confused!
To adapt, be just like the bass. Look for the warmest water with the most baitfish!
The best times during this cold weekend will be from mid morning to late evenings, so sleep in late, launch, then and enjoy the warm mid day sunshine!
Regardless, these bass have still go to eat, so present them with a slow easy to catch meal. And this does not mean only fishing with bottom dragging lures!
Lures like deep diving crankbaits, presented with long casts and a slow, stop-and-go retrieve. Especially suspending models that will work in any condition! Or suspending jerk baits!
Or maybe go a little bigger on 3/4 ounce lures like Rattling lipless lures. Or over sized 3/4 spinnerbaits, ten inch worms, jig combos or creature baits.
Even weightless lures will work! Yamamoto's Senkos, soft plastic worms or shad imitations.
Rigged with 3/0 hooks and no added weight on lighter 10-12 pound test line, these weightless lures will entice sluggish bass to bite, especially when making long casts and slowly awaiting it to sink to the bottom.
Or await prespawn bass to move up shallow in early March! Always call on Reeds Guide Service First!
