Hernando Beach Inshore Fishing Report
Capt. Josh Fritz
Well summer is here and it is HOT out side. Fishing is great during the early morning hours and late evening hours, Red fish action is best during the morning hours till about 10am. A good incoming tide is even better for a early morning red fish bite. Look for reds around the outside points and coves with good structure and mullet schools. Live bait is working best my go to live bait for right now is green backs you can find these great baits on the shallow grass flats bubbling on the surface.
Trout action is hot on the deeper grass flats 10 to 14 feet. Use a 1/4 ounce jig head I like the mission fishin jigs rigged with a white gulp shrimp or little john soft plastic lures in the white and chartreuse color.
Along with the trout you will come across sharks, sea bass, blue fish, lady fish, gag grouper, and cobia. The cobia action this year has been unreal. During summer months the cobia action slows down do to the hot water temp but this year is strange we are seeing and catching cobia on a lot of our near shore trips.
Scallop season is very good North of Bay port to Chassahowitzka in 5 to 8 feet of water. This year we are finding a lot of scallops on the sandy bottom areas and not so much on the grass. Just look for the pack of boats and you are in the area. I would stay away for the pack of boats a little ways for safety.
When you are in the Hernando county area stop into the best tackle shop in the Nature Coast Precision Tackle located on U.S Hwy 19 in Spring Hill in the Well Care Plaza. Dave and Tom will take great care of you and hook you up with any tackle rods, reels, line etc. and Tome will fix any rod and reel problems you might have. Tell Dave Capt. Josh sent you in .
