In May, the fishing is for big Blue Marlin, Wahoo and Spearfish. It is an exciting month to fish since there is such a good variety of fish around. We don't have as many Blue Marlin in May as later in the summer but they average larger. Yesterday there were two Blue Marlin caught by the Kona Fleet...one 509 lbs and the other 728 lbs.
May is also our best month for Wahoo. I like to start out the day with light tackle fishing for Wahoo. We should catch one or two of these great tasting speedsters on the rocky points just outside the harbor. Then I usually troll down to the Keauhou ledge where we can catch some live bait in the form of skipjack tuna (5-10 lbs). I then bridle them up and slow troll them for Blue Marlin. Later in the day, we can troll lures outside looking for a Blue Marlin or Spearfish. During May I like to run one standup 30 lb outfit on long rigger for Spearfish. These Billfish put up a great fight on light tackle!
May is also a wonderful time to be out on the water. Our water is consistently calm, about 80 degrees and usually dead flat water. Some of our largest Blue Marlin of the year are caught in May. Last May 14th, I landed my biggest one of the year at 963 lbs.
