Looks like it will be a good winter for sheepsheads fishing. Inshore around Pine Island they thrive in the winter cold, despite the above average temperatures we are finding a good number of nice ones for the dinner table in Pine Island Sound and Matlacha Pass
Our average size redfish is smaller than those we were catching over the past few months. Many are running below eighteen inches but there are still some nice ones biting. We caught our larger fish around oyster bars and off sandy shorelines along mangrove Islands.
Until the water temperature drops you can still expect snook around mangrove shorelines and oyster bars. The fish pictured below inhaled a live pilchard in Matlacha Pass.
Spanish mackerel are still hanging around Charlotte Harbor. Until the water temperature drops further there is no reason for the macks to migrate south, with warm water and plenty of small baitfish to eat why leave. Fresh mackerel are great on the table.
The end of the year is near and we are catch and releasing plenty of trout. All indications show that when season reopens on the first of the year trout fishing should be very good.
Wishing You and Yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy and safe New Year
