That word HOT will just about explain it all. The HOT water temperature brings all the pretty people to the beaches. The HOT daily temperature gets us anglers on the water early. And last but most importantly the HOT fishing is wide open!!!
The King Mackerel bite is as good as it gets right now. The fish are close in and are fairly easy to find, just find the bait and you're on the fish. Most of the close in fishing is around the sea buoys in Pensacola Pass and East Pass in Destin. There are a lot of buoys so don't get discouraged if you don't hook up on the first couple just keep working your way around until you start getting knock downs and then your on the right spot. Finding bait is the most important thing. Lots of big schools of False Albacore mixed with Spanish mackerel are close in and are a blast to catch and the Spanish is very good table fare.
The near shore reefs have been very kind to me over the last month. I haven't fished in any water deeper than 90 foot, this equates to anywhere from four to nine miles off the beach. Over the past few days the fishing has been off, but towards the first part of the week it was HOT! I'm thinking the new moon has the off just a little.
Light tackle fishing these near shore reefs are a must for catching nice limits of Mangrove and Red Snapper. You'll lose a fish now and then but you will get a lot more bites. I use 30 pound test spinning gear and conventional reels, the smallest weight I can get by with and about six feet of 30 to 40 pound test fluorocarbon leader and a number 2 or 3 inline point circle hook by Gamakatsu.
There is a lot more going on and I'll report on it in a few days. Like the big show of Tarpon, or the 500 pound Bull shark we caught, and the Jack Cravelle on the beach, Sailfish busting through the big schools of bait, the log that had ten Cobia on it, the 60 pound Barracuda one of the Fishin Chix caught, our first place King Mackerel in the Fishin Chix tournament, the big schools of chicken Dolphin (little Mahi-Mahi), the 36 inch Red Fish on 8lb test line fish top water for Specks, well you get the idea, it's all good just get out there and catch some fish!
One of the greatest dangers in fishing is the danger of falling for the temptation of all the gizmos, do-dads, and what's-it's that are available to the fisherman these days!!
I know one thing for sure - You ain't going to catch'em sittin' on the couch!!
So get out there, and take a kid fishing. God Bless.
