Weekly Report: 9-22-11 to 9-29-11
Keeping Up with Kevin Brock
A quick note about fishing locations: Kevin will be fishing on the Sacramento River for September 29 to October 2. On October 3-6, he will be back on the Klamath River, then from October 7-31 (and maybe beyond, depending on the season), he will be back fishing the Feather and Sacramento Rivers.
The website at www.fishkevinbrock.com will have the latest updates.
This past week, Kevin Brock was mostly fishing the Klamath River near the town of Klamath, with excellent action on bright sea-run king salmon. With the current size restrictions that are in place on the lower 40 miles of the Klamath River, all salmon over 22" long must be released back into the water. The fishermen on Kevin's boat didn't mind, because they were seeing a lot of hot salmon action, and having a lot of fun in the process.
For example, on Tuesday 9-27-11, the 6 anglers on board caught over 30 Klamath River salmon, and took home full limits (3 each) of jack salmon under 22". The day saw several double hookups, a triple hookup, and even and a quad hookup (but only landed three out of the four). The following day, 21 salmon were landed. That's just excellent fishing, especially cionsidering that these salmon are just in from the ocean, and full of fight and zip. Every day last week saw solid Klamath River salmon action, and some days were outstanding.
The fish were caught drifting roe on light tackle, using 8-pound fluorocarbon leader with 10 lb P-Line, Penn 260 Slammer spinning reels, and G. Loomis GL3 ultralight rods, for the ultimate in fishing action.
On Thursday 9-29-11, Kevin was back on the Sacramento River. The bite was very good, with full limits of king salmon for 4 anglers by 10:30am. There were some good-sized salmon landed, as the largest salmon for the day weighed 33.6 lbs, and there were 3 fish over 20 lbs. The salmon fillets are a good reddish-orange color, great for eating or smoking.
The fish were caught drifting roe on light tackle, using 10 lb. fluorocarbon leader with 12 lb P-Line, Penn 260 Slammer spinning reels, and G. Loomis GL3 ultralight rods, for great light tackle action. Because of the potential for really large salmon, slightly heavier line is used on the Sacramento River.
As reported in the Hot Bites! fishing report, a bonus 5'+ sturgeon was brought to the boat using 10 lb. P-Line, and released. Congratulations to the angler that accomplished that!
