Spotted Sea Trout
It has always been reported by others as well as myself that the large trout normally find the beachfront have favorable conditions especially during the months from late spring till late August. After this time frame they migrate back into the sounds, rivers, and then the creeks where the cycle starts all over again. This movement has taken place with large amounts of these breach front ladies moving inshore or should I say, "heading west!" Most of the fish that Captain Jack caught were pulled from the sound and river area. He targeted areas, which offered up underwater structure (oyster rakes) that was located in around 7 to 10 feet of water. Captain Jack rule of thumb when it comes to getting your best chance at catching trout is "clear moving water!"
Here's a scenario that you can take into to consideration:
Lets assume that you are fishing a slough on an out going tide. As we all know when the tide is falling the moving water is washed over loose mud particles, which becomes a muddy milk shake like mixture. If you could get high enough you could pick areas in which were the most effected. Normally when a slough is empting out only one side is effective by these muddy water conditions. This is normally the current side meaning wherever the current is heading. Heck, there is a muddy line formed for sure! You will also notice an eddy, which is normally formed as the water flows out of the slough as it makes it turn into the main current. This area normally also looks very muddy. You aren't going to believe this one, but the clear water around the muddy is going to be your place to fish! Please remember fish that are going with the flow out of the slough, but once in the main current don't go with it but rather against it. Thus making the clear areas best spots to fish!
As I reported earlier, most of the trout were caught in 7 to 10 feet of water. Captain Jack presented his bait in the mid water column, which means he wasn't fishing on the bottom. Trout are sight feeders, which means they like to ambush their prey. The mid water column presentation worked like a charm in getting the trout's attention!
As far as bait live shrimp worked the best. However, when the bite got "red hot" once again anything worked. Bites like this mean can only one thing "fall is just around the corner!"
