Fishing Report for Wk of Sept. 23rd 2007 For Master Baiter's Sportfishing and Tackle
Written By: Stan Gabruk
Things are definitely in a state of transition as Autum is coming quickly. The kids are back in School, both Mexican, Canadian, and American alike. The crowds are gone for the next few weeks, no reservations needed at restaurants as Puerto Vallarta endures the slowest time of the year for local venders.
Those lucky enough to be here in Puerto Vallarta, during the High Season for fishing, are boating Huge Marlin, Monster Yellowfin Tuna, Large Sailfish, Pargo, and the list goes on. This is what fishing is all about, this is the time of year the fishing magazines are roaming Marina Vallarta looking for the next World Record PV is so well know for. It's almost unimaginable any person on a 12 hrs trip would not come in with something to brag about for the rest of their lives!
Corbetena, has been a On Again / Off Again location. When it's firing at the Rock, Yellowfin Tuna in excess of 300 lbs is happening daily. Black Marlin minimum size in the past week in Marina Vallarta was 400 lbs. and that was on the small side. Many in the past days have been above 600 lbs. Still, no Granders this year as yet. Bait can be an issue at Corbetena at times, so never refuse an opportunity to fill your Tuna Tubes. It may be the only chance you'll have to make bait that day. For Dog Tooth Pargo Fans or Cubera Snappers in the English language, are large, aggressive and On-Tap amigos. So Corbetena may be worth a chance, just listen to your radios.
When Corbetena was slow, you could bet El Banco was going off like a volcano! It wasn't unusual to see 300 lb. Hot Lava Tuna Rockets launching them selves through a Skipjack Bait balls the size of a large McDonalds, parking lot and all, to heights of ten feet or more. My friend Herk told me of an amazing sight at El Banco the other day, imagine this: You're cruising along trolling looking at the horizon for billfish, birds or bait boils. Then all of a sudden, without warning, Thousands of Monster Yellowfin Tuna, a hundred feet off the port side, slash through a bait ball all at once. Imagine this being an area the size of a couple football fields connected end to end. For a brief moment in time, Herk was witness to the greatness and wonder the sea has to offer. When the Yellowfin aren't jumping the Marlin are doing their best to steal the show. Again, this time of the year even the small ones are over 400 lbs. Rainbow runners on the high spots are always great of the grill. Abundant, large Mahi Mahi in the 25 to 60 lb. range with many larger. Plenty of bait, perfect water temperatures, smooth seas, what else could you ask for?
Anywhere in or out of the bay is a wonderland for the vacationing angler. For those who come to Puerto Vallarta this time of year for the fishing, congradulations, you timed it perfectly. El Morro and The Marietta Islands are bursting at the seams with Roosterfish, Snapper, Dorado, Bonito, Sailfish and more…..
South end of the bay, at the river mouths the snapper has been perfect for the "Dinner Angler" looking for the blue plate Special!
Punta De Mita is still a great place to go for Mahi Mahi. You won't be disappointed! Just find the buoys and you've got dinner!
Master Baiter's own Carlos Soberone is still out there making Puerto Vallarta a better place to live and commute. He has stretched his wings a little to include areas off the beaten path. The city reniged on the pledge to provide paint. So this is squarely on the shoulders of Master Baiter's and Carlos. If you care about the place where you live and keeping the painful eyesores off out city structures, then you can come by the Marina Vallarta Shop and donate time, money or money.
My secret for the week is this: Be at the fishing grounds at day break, Full Moon, New Moon, I don't care. If you're going to be serious about boating a Monster, do what it takes, spend the extra money for an overnight trip. Be there at sundown and sunup. Fishing is not a convient sport for the Angler. If you want that trophy, it's not going to jump in the boat because you spent a tidy chunk of change. You can do what it takes, or you can take what you get.
Until next week, don't forget to kiss your fish!
