Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 8/11/07
The heat and severe sun has slowed the bite on Guntersville this past week. We reached outside temperature of over 100 degrees and water temperature in the low 90's, and without a doubt it has taken its toll on the fishing. There is active fish, but they're schooled up and it takes awhile to find them. You're spending sometimes hours between bites to find them.
When we did manage to find them our catches averaged in numbers anywhere from 10 to 16 fish, the size however was in the 2 to 3 pound range so the bigger fish stayed buried and didn't feed well for me.
The fish we were catching were generally in water deeper than 10 foot; they seem to be hiding in ditches and grass edges. We caught them on a variety of baits, from a big worm; to a 1oz. Tight-Line Jig and a crank bait running just deep enough to touch the top of the grass.
I expect this upcoming week to have to really get into the flipping bite deep in the grass or start running a 20-foot type crank bait to find the fish. We should also start seeing some activity on the traditional rat bite. As this hot sun burns the topped out grass it should create some slimy, mossy areas for you to drag a rat over the top.
Come fish with me, were catching fish, still having fun regardless of the heat, my instructional fishing is going well. If there is a technique you would like to learn please see my web site for details. Let's fish the grass together!
