Summer fishing is a little up and down. Usually the best fishing has been early in the morning. Sharks are thick and can spoil what looks like a good sea trout bite. Today the bite was definitely on! Fishing close to sound with live shrimp kept half a dozen flounders. The largest was 4.25 lbs. released another half dozen or so keeper size flounders (13 inch). The sea trout bite was similar. Kept six or seven 16" trout. Released another half dozen or so (keeper fish). Not bad for three hours of fishing. The trick was likely fishing on the leading edge of a front. Fishing always involves some luck. Today we were lucky. Yesterday fishing sand spits in front of Cabbage Island. It looks like a good sea trout was about to materialize then large bonnet head sharks took over. A four-foot bonnet head can give an awesome tug and provide plenty of fun and experience in fighting a large fish on light tackle. The bonnet head numbers look good. The large ones are likely pregnant females. Rarely do we keep a bonnet head and seldom if ever keep a large female.
This week the tides are pretty small with highs in 6.5-foot range. The best sea trout action will likely be found close to the sounds and beachfronts in areas where fishermen find clean water, structure, food and current. The algae bloom looks like murky water. An area with clean water one week and plenty of fish might be murky and void of fish the next. In trout fishing just keep looking. Redfish action is on the upswing. There were several good catches of red fish in the 25-inch range along with lots of smaller fish landed. Bait, small mullet and shrimp, are plentiful in tidal creeks. As bait becomes more plentiful redfish should heat up!
Jimmy Adams says shrimp are becoming plentiful and growing fast. "In a couple of weeks fishermen will be complaining the shrimp too large". Jimmy was kidding with this statement. Jimmy said this to let me know the shrimp are growing quickly.
Hope this of help! Good fishing!
