Fishing Report for Week of October 5 2008 for Master Baiter's Sportfishing and Tackle
Written By: Stan Gabruk
It's Mahi Mania at El Banco!
I've lived in Puerto Vallarta for many, many years now and I've been the owner of Master Baiter's Sportfishing and Tackle for most of that time now. I've seen fantasy fishing days when you couldn't believe any fish could get that big. And on the other hand, I've seen times that could just make you wonder if you really knew anything about fishing at all? Well, it's been one of those years that can make you talk to yourself!
When it comes to Puerto Vallarta, our world famous fishing grounds are world renound for being among the best there is. But this year, we've had a real problem when it comes to having the Monster Yellowfin Tuna over 200 lbs. We're seeing them in spurts, one day you can head out to El Banco or Corbetena and boat a nice 150 lb. Yellowfin tuna, the next day, they're all in the 40 lb. range. Now having Yellowfin Tuna isn't exactly bad news, even the smallest of them fight surprisingly strong and if you're used to Salmon and Trout, even a small YF Tuna will get you excited. But we're a little jaded around here, and we're all looking for Monsters! One thing is for sure, if you're not out there, you can't get one! With the full moon on us, you'll want to make sure if you're tying to hit the morning bite, you'd be better off on an overnight trip.
Speaking of an overnight-er, where you wake up at the fishing Grounds with the bite on! This is an option most people don't take advantage of. But for the same price, plus food, you save 8 hrs travel time as compared to taking two 12 hr trips. Same boats, more fish, less travel time, hard to find a down side here so keep it in mind!
There are more fish to target than Yellowfin out there, which is the beautiful thing about PV. You can head out to the deep blue water locations like El Banco and Corbetena with expectations of returning with at least several hook-ups. Black and Blue Marlin have been in steady supply this week. You could expect Marlin in the 350 lb and up range, some to 750 lbs. That's not too shabby amigos!
El Morro, Marietta Islands and the point off Punta Mita have all been great locations for Sailfish. Eight hour trips on a Super Panga are affordable, can handle up to four adults, and there's a ton of game fish in these areas right now. If you're in these 8 hr. spots you'll come in with Chicken Dorado, Bonito, Sailfish, Jack Crevells, Needle fish, and more, with the outside chance of a Marlin.
The water temperatures are perfect, there's plenty of bait fish in the water, the days have been sunny and the rains are slowing down as we come into tourist high season. The upcoming months promise to continue to produce Sailfish and Marlin.
This week the main story is still Mahi Mahi (aka Dorado) at the deep water locations. They've been extremely abundant and if you're at The Bank in the later afternoon the bite has been unbelievable. For the past few days the bite has been late in the afternoon or early (before 9:00 a.m.). The middle of the day can be kinda slow, but this is fishing so be patient. You'll come in with some thing to smile about….
If you've never visited Marina Vallarta, I'd like to invite everyone down to check it out. Restaurant Row is just outside of my shop, with shopping, a nice boardwalk to stroll and plenty of Yachts to grab your imagination. So come on down and enjoy a relaxing drink and watch the sun set.
