Mike Ortego

First let me wish everyone happy holidays.

With the end of 2008 and the New Year on its way the redfish and trout bite has been great. Water levels are very low but the visibility is clear throughout the Lagoon. Low waters isn't necessarily a bad thing with calm winds in the morning, schools of tailing reds can be found on most major flats. Trout have been running with these schools and big gator trout can be caught fishing the deeper sand pockets in two to three feet of water.

Pinfish and hand-pick shrimp is the bait of choice and can be bought at any of the local bait shops like Lelles or Action baits. It may behoove you to keep a couple of blue crabs in the bait box just in case you come across one of the big breeder schools of redfish that can get to 30lbs plus. Just remember to handle these fish with great care as they are the future of the fish stocks.

On the artificial / fly front, Berkley gulp 4" shrimp in new penny and white have been great producers. For the end of your tippet clouser minnows or a spoon fly has been the right choice out of the fly box.

Hope this helps and good luck on the water!
