Happy New Year from Kona-Jan. 1, 2009 UPDATE!
It was a VERY Happy New Year for Jill Eigert from Tampa Florida. Jill had chartered HighNoon for a New Years day fishing charter to take her 80 year old Mom (Bertha Finch) out on the water off Kona and maybe catch a smaller fish or two. I decided to work an area where some 30- 40 lb Spearfish had been biting the last few days. About 8 am, my long rigger went off. Thinking it was another Spearfish, I got Jill in the fighting chair and then tightened the drag a bit. The line began screaming off of reel...and this 500 lb Blue came rocketing out of the water. It even charged the boat and gave Jill and her Mom VERY close up view as this 500 lb went greyhounding right by the boat. Jill did an absolutely great job fighting this fish and in about an hour we got the fish to the back of the boat. Unfortunately, the last few minutes, the fish sounded and then died, so we were unable to release this fish. It weighed in at 514 lbs....and is now on the board as the largest Blue Marlin so far in 2009. What a New Years memory for Jill and her mom Bertha. Photo Below:
The Kona deep sea fishing continues to be excellent this winter for Blue Marlin, striped Marlin, Spearfish and Mahi Mahi. Yesterday, December 31, we tagged and released a nice Spearfish and missed two more. As for the fishing conditions, the Kona fishing conditions have been great with warm, clear and calm water conditions. Our air temps are at 83 and the water temps are 78 degrees making this a great time for Blue Marlin and other big game fishing off Kona, Hawaii. Ask about our combination big game fishing along with some incredible snorkeling. Also, the humpback whales have now arrived in good numbers. Call 808-895-3868 for reservations or information.
