I love light tackle fishing the Mayport Jetties, probably more than anything else in the area.
But there comes a time, during the year when if I was a Redbass. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near the inlet.
WHY?
Because of JAWS! They're Redfish eaters by nature. Can't count how many Reds I've caught with their tails missing, chunks taken out of their backs, and with gapping wounds.
Between the local herds of Dolphins (Flippers) and the 100 pound Spinner, Blacktip and Bull Sharks that show up at the Mayport Inlet, aka: the Jetties. Where the St. Johns River meets the Ocean, in the heat of the summer.
I'D BE HIDING DOWN RIVER TOO!
So after a morning of catching Croakers, or at least trying too....SHARKS like Croakers too!
Loosing a bunch or rigs to all the teeth.
I took Erica and her daughter down river.
Here is where we ran into the heavy weights I'm talking about!
Monster Redbass can be "ALMOST" a year round fish, in NE Florida's St. Johns River.
Not much like a river at all, but rather one deep, fast moving, extremely tidal, super saline, long skinny "BAY". (which is more than half it's challenge...I wish it was more like a fresh water river, because when it is, the fishing is thru the roof. But that means wet years full of storms and huge amounts of rain.)
So we anchored up, tossed out Croakers and Pogies and WELLA...Erica was in REDBASS HAWG HEAVEN!
