Getting underway early with clear skies and a chill in the air, the RELENTLESS departed the dock at 5:30 AM for a day of cod and haddock fishing. Fishing with Captain Dave and Captain Curt were a group of four very talented anglers from New Jersey.
Today's group included Tom Engel of Southampton, NJ, Tom Stone, Medford, NJ, Dave Frett, Westmont, NJ and Thomas Swider of Cape May, NJ.
The day started out slow fishing deep water east of Stellwagen Bank where we found good results during the past two trips. With a little wind blowing and fish not cooperating we headed back to the shallow waters on top of the bank. This provided pretty good results with the party landing nice size haddock and market sized cod. Fish were feeding on sand eels along with the gannets that were all over the area dive bombing into the water from high altitudes to come up with a meal.
Today's fish were caught on clams and 16 oz jigs rigged with grubs as teasers. Due to the hard work of these guys they put respectable amounts of fish into the box which Curt filleted on the way back to Green Harbor, MA. If the bite was better in the AM, it would have been and outstanding day. At the end of the day I spoke to other charter boat captains who had the same type of day. We would locate the fish, whack a few, go back to the spot and they were gone chasing bait hard and fast until you found another pile.
I want to thank Tom Engel and the rest of this great group for stepping aboard RELENTLESS for a day of fishing. I do not understand why but for some reason they feel folks here have this Boston accent which I have no idea what they are talking about. They fish hard year round and do quite a bit of giant sea bass fishing off the coast of New Jersey and were telling us about the exciting yellowfin and wahoo fishing around Fat Tuesday out of Venice, LA, something myself and Captain Curt would like to try.
Once again we have lots of dates open and if we can not get the date or have larger parties we have another boat we can put you on. Dates are also starting to fill for bass, blue and tuna trips.
I am planning on running a Memorial Day Weekend Shared Charters for Cod and Haddock so you can bring some fish chowder to the holiday barbecue this year.
