For their 2nd day I took Matt and Larry down the city stretch Glenmore through Fish Creek park and down to Policeman's flats, as I knew the city would have the cleanest water after the big influx of water. The right side of the river was noticeably dirtier as the elbow was dumping in very dirty water. The river was high which is typically my favorite way to fish this river but the fish didn't seem to be super tight to the bank.
Just when we started getting cleaner water and finding fish on the banks again we were thrown another curve ball. I found a monster 23-24ish" brown feeding very actively on the surface right up against the bank. We started casting dries to the brown trying to figure out what he was eating as there were caddis, stones, golden stones, PMD's, and tiny BWO's on the water and we needed to find the bug this brown was selectively feeding on. While casting to him and trying several different flies the water dropped over 6"! The water against the bank this fish had been sitting in was all but disappearing and the brown vacated the bank for more stable water levels...we couldn't catch a break...and then we did.
Matt got his big brown right tight to the bank and it put up an impressive battle before being slipped into the net. That fish made the day. They both landed several other fish but the chunky 21" brown was the type of fish these New Yorkers came for.
