Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report 1/8/07

FINALLY - a little bit of winter is arriving. Today 3" of fresh snow, more in the forecast and below zero temps before the week is over.

Anglers over the weekend reporting some success; crappies, walleyes and saugers all showing signs of life.

Some big pike reported this week taken by tip-ups and by spearing. Enthusiasts enjoying the law change which lets spear throwers enjoy angling at the same time and place.

Anglers finding crappies suspended off the bottom 5-10', walleye and sauger caught in 28 to 35' depths.

Tube jigs and small plastics for crappies, small blade jigs for walleyes, tip jigs with minnows.

Shallow fresh snow on firm smooth ice will allow easy travel throughout Kabetogama and most areas of Namakan, Sand Point and Crane.

Live decoys for spearing and light northern suckers for tip-ups is the answer for pike in the shallow weedy bays.
