Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report Opening Weekend 5/14/07
The opening brought with it beautiful weather on Saturday and a pleasant Sunday accompanied by South Winds!
The bite was expected to be shallow, however, shallow fish were northerns and 17" plus walleyes. Many anglers reported lots of fun catching 19"-21" walleyes.
Successful walleye anglers found their catch in 30-45' depths. Several limits were reported, jig and minnow seemed to be the answer.
Anglers reported all bigger walleyes caught were spawned out and the males have done their job and returned to deeper waters.
Saugers seem to be plentiful with many caught over the weekend. Reports of saugers holding spawn was reported by many.
Northern pike were caught on live bait and suspended artificials in the 12-15' depths.
Crappie action was not happening, but this may change as the lake warms up and they migrate in to spawn.
Perch and sauger were caught most often between 18-26'. This action should continue next week.
Favorite spots were many, shallow wind blown bays for larger walleyes and pike, and wind blown reef edges over 30' using jig and minnow.
Good Luck,
Have Fun,
Phil and Ellen Hart
