Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report August 11, 2008
We experienced one of the most beautiful weeks the area has seen in decades. Great temperatures, including cool nights and only moderate winds.
Campers, anglers and numerous guides reported good fishing and catching throughout Voyageurs National Park.
The walleye bite is pleasantly strong for August in Kabetogama and Namakan, with June-like water temperatures around 72˚--it doesn't get any better.
Anglers are finding walleyes steadily at depths of 22-32' with the exception of the shallow bite mornings and evenings.
Leeches are still the commanding bait using slip-sinker rigs, with or without a spinner. It's best to also try crawlers before leaving the area just in case they are finicky.
Reefs are definitely where the action is, and where most effort should be expended.
Smallmouth taking artificials and plastics at 12-15' depths along rock walls and rock piles. Mepp's spinners a must to try.
Pike'a few nice pike between 38-42' caught; maybe the bite for these girls will pick up after a slow start.
For walleye anglers, zero in on humps, reefs and depressions; a good map is your guide to success.
Use light line and tackle for the walleyes; red hooks seem to give you an edge.
Crawler enthusiasts should consider Mustad's slow death hooks which spin the crawlers drawing attention.
This fall is beginning to look like it could be one of the best in the past decade, as has the summer.
Have a Great Day!
