Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report 7/27/08

A mild, warm weather week has been enjoyed by all and makes for a pleasant fishing experience throughout the park.

Anglers are enjoying the increased activity of northern pike and smallmouth bass.

Walleyes have moved out of shallow water for the most part and are found on reef edges favoring the windward side.

Slip sinker rigs with or without a spinner 3-4' long with a leech or crawler is now the preferred presentation.

Look seriously at your maps for changing structure, humps and depressions favoring 26-30' for walleye hangouts.

Center reef is kicking out fish on Kab as are some of the small reefs near the Marten Islands.

Pike are on weed lines and weed edges at 18' plus, a flashy or noisy bait just below the surface is sure to get their attention.

Smallmouth on gravel shorelines and near rock piles throughout the lakes looking for crayfish.

Occasionally the trophy size smallies chase minnows in the deeper weeds where a surface crank bait could be a bonus.

It's the time of year finally when the scenery is breathtaking and hungry big fish look for prey.
