Fishing in South Florida can be a vey exciting, exhausting and rewarding expierence. We start off from the St. Lucie Inlet which is known for its varying channels and shoaling sandbars. It's a hot summer morning on the 25th of August 2007. We head out just after dawn while all the recreational fisherman are looking for some schooling baits. I notice some severe weather just to the south of the Inlet so , I decide to head north towards an area known to all as the House of Refuge. After about thirty minutes of filling the live well with about eight to ten dozen sardines, we plotted a course East of the Nuclear Power Plant approximately six miles out.
After arriving at the first fishing spot we setup to drift live sardines along a ledge that produces Dolphin, Kings and an occasional Sailfish. Inside of ten minutes, the port side rod went screaming out with a bend in the rod to match. While this occurred the starboard rod went off with the same scream. A double hook-up of two nice Atlantic Bonito. Nothing like warming up the old body with a screaming pair of Bonito. After we had our fill of Bonito we moved south east from there approximatley five miles. This is when all calm went over the side with non-stop action for the next hour and half. We managed to make our limit of Kingfish. During this feeding frenzey we also bagged a few nice Carribean sharks in the three to four foot range.
The trip ended with about thirty fish being caught! All fish were released with the exception of the Kingfish that will be gracing the dinner table for the next few evenings!
