The Kona deep sea fishing continues to be excellent this winter for Blue Marlin, striped Marlin, Spearfish and Mahi Mahi. The best winter Kona Blue Marlin fishing in a decade. Yesterday, we landed a 501 blue Marlin and released another blue weighing approximately 200 lbs. (Story below). As for the fishing conditions, the Kona fishing conditions have been great with warm, clear and calm water conditions. Our air temps are at 83 and the water temps are 78 degrees making this a great time for Blue Marlin and other big game fishing off Kona Hawaii. Also, the humpback whales have now arrived in good numbers and are seen on most of our charters now. Also, on a few occasions we have stopped off at Captain Cooks monument while our anglers took a short break and snorkeled in the best water in Hawaii. January 13, 2009 was a very special day for Ann Bybee and Grant Ellis from Carterville, Illinois. I guess Ann is the fisherperson since she fought all the fish. Grant got involved with helping to clear lines, keeping the fighting chair pointed toward the fish and helping to hold leader while I released the fish. Ann and Grant had chartered HighNoon for a full day for big game fishing along with snorkeling at Captain Cooks. First we trolled out to a FAD bouy to catch some skipjack tuna which which we then put out as live bait. After a slow two hours, suddenly one of our baits got snatched by a huge tiger shark which ran off about 150 yards before biting through the mono leader. Since we were only about 2 miles from Captain Cooks and the snorkeling area, I just put out three lures and headed to the snorkeling grounds. About 5 minutes later my short corner lure went off and Ann jumped into the fighting chair. She did a great job and in about 30 minutes, this 200 lb. Blue Marlin was along side the boat where we released it unharmed. Turns out this was only practice for a bigger fish yet to come. We went into Captain Cooks where Ann and Bill spent a refreshing hour snorkeling. Heading back, I followed my previous tracks on the GPS chart plotter. As we approached the circle tracks where we had struck the first fish, I mentioned to Ann that there could be a big female Marlin in the area. No sooner were the words out of my mouth, than the short rigger went screaming off....and this was a big fish. Ann again jumped in the chair and watched in awe as this 500 lb fish put white water everywhere and provided the greatest show of the year. Actually, that was a good thing, since that tired out the fish and we had her along side the boat in about 45 minutes. After trying in vain to get the hooks out, we decided to take this fish. She weighed in at 501 lbs...and is the 3 largest Blue Marlin taken this year. I feel very fortunate, since as HighNoon has also landed both the number 2 and number 3 largest fish of the year in Kona Hawaii. See photo below:
