The falling water level has defiantly improved the fishing. Lake Texoma water temperature is at 69° and the elevation is now at 625 (7 ft. above normal) and falling. They are currently releasing water at 30,000 CFS at a constant rate which is dropping the lake about 6-8" per day. All the boat ramps and campgrounds should be opened back up in a couple of weeks.
I have always heard people say that when the lake elevation is falling the fish stop biting. I never listened to those people and the fishing has improved since the lake began to fall. We are catching bigger fish up to 15 lbs and they are more aggressive. The shad spawn, which seemed to have been pushed back due to the flood, is now happening in full force. Bait has been easy against the banks at daylight. I've been catching my bait in one or two throws the past couple of days. I'm also starting to see some fish blowing up in the spawning shad so now is the time to catch some fish on top.
I've been catching my limits in 30 minutes to an hour which is as fast as I can take fish off the hook and get re-baited. This does not matter weather I have 2 or 6 people in the boat as with more rods in the water come more fish in the boat. I've been catching most all of my fish on anchor using bait near the river channel between 40-50ft of water. The channel catfish are beginning to spawn on the rocks and after a quick limit, and with the customers' approval, we've been catching a few channel cats before we head back to fill in the rest of their time. It's really up to my customers as to what they want to do after we catch a limit. They have options of lure fishing, continuing to catch and release, catfishing, looking for BIG fish, and I'll even go hang out on the beach when there is beach available. The fishing is awesome and so is the weather. Now is the time to fish!
