With the 2010 Bassmaster Classic only one month away, all 51 Classic contenders are gearing up for this world renouned event featuring the worlds best bass anglers!

This weekends weather (and the low teens we had in Alabama in early January), will be similar. In early January the lows were in the teens for several days and the daytime highs not even reaching 50 degrees for an entire week!

This weekends weather is; low 25 and high around 40 degrees all weekend. The water just has not had a chance to warm up! The water temp early in the new year got down to 39 degrees, the coldest I've ever seen Lay lake.

Recently a slight warming trend in the mid 60's for a few days coupled with a few warm nights in the mid 50's, brought up Lay lakes water temps into the mid 40's.

Still, these bass have got to eat! We have fished the lakes headwaters situated right below Logan Martin lake dam with good results...if you can stand the cold!

We only caught bass on two lures. Black and blue 1/2 ounce jig and crayfish combos and pearl colored Fat Free Shad deep diving crankbaits. Combined, these lures produced around 10 bass, with some nice spotted bass, some weighing up to 4 pounds. All spotted bass.

The largemouths bite is better in the weeds at mid to lower lake. But still you must fish very slow. Most upper lake creeks are still very cold, in addition to recent rains, they are all featuring heavely stained to muddy water conditions.

So, as most Classic contenders sit and wait for that Classic crown to be awarded, they are all praying for a week long warming trend. Just like the conditions when Boyd Duckett won it!

Look for more 2010 Bassmaster Classic updates soon! Also I have a few days open for Classic week, Feb 15-20 if interested in a guided trip to fish and watch these pros in action on Lay lake!
