Happy Father's Day!
My father left me a legacy that I can carry throughout for the rest of my life!
Captain Sherman Helmey 1901-1993 wore many hats during his lifetime.
My father accomplished a lot of things in his lifetime, but first and most "he was a great dad!" After my mother was killed in an automobile accident when I was five years old he basically was thrown into "full time raising a child!" My father was one of the most colorful characters that you will ever meet.
He coined such phases as: "The fish aren't biting, because they have the sore mouth!" It's rough, because those astronauts must be walking on the moon again!" "That's not the same wife you introduced me to last time!" "If you aren't happy with the fish that you are catching, here's a pen and paper send them a note!" He also used the word "Sapphire" a lot, which meant, depending on his location at the time, either a fine fish or a very good-looking women! When black flies appeared my father would always say, "there is a northeaster-a-coming and she's gonna blow 3, 6, or 9 days. According to my father in a sequence of waves the sixth to ninth wave is always the biggest!
He loved trying unusual things such as turning his car off on top of the Turner Creek Bridge just to see if it would coast all the way to the end of our drive way. According to my father some cars coasted further than others. I called this "coasting on the coast!" As a child he always took me out to dinner on Wednesday night to the "World famous restaurant Johnny Harris's!" The eating out wasn't near a much fun as the ride there. Back in the good old days two lane highways were all we had especially when leaving Wilmington Island. So therefore if you happen to get behind a slow driver it was just too bad especially if you were in a hurry. In my father's case, he would just stick his head out of the window, make his own siren noise with his mouth, and cars within hearing distance would move to the side of the road as if a policeman was pulling them over. We would then speed by with none the wiser! I quite often called my father the "human siren!"
My father didn't invent high speed trolling, because he though fish would hit his fast pulled lures. It just happened one day when several of his customers didn't hear him say, "Pull your lines in!" After seeing the customers didn't, he just remarked, "who knows maybe a fish will hit them and it happened!" Fishermen are still apologizing to me for running over my father's high speed trolling lures! It seem they always ran up behind his boat getting tangled into his long pulled trolling lines.
There is another thing I miss and that's counting cows with my father. When we traveled we played a game. Who ever had the most cows on their side of the road for the duration of the trip would win. I miss counting cows! Another thing about traveling with my father was we really never packed anything. As soon as we arrived at our destination point, he would find a children store along with a mother shopping and ask her to please help me find some clothes. For this service he would purchase an out fit for her child! When traveling if our windows fogged he would pour coke cola on our windshield and it cleared them right up!
I could go on and I usually do! However, I will stop at this time just to say, "I miss my father and greatly cherish the times that we had"! I suggest spending all the time that you can with your dad, because memories can't be made unless you experience them first!
