'Little Miss Judy Believe It or Not!'
Driving Legally Without a License
Part One
If you have been following my stories or reading any of our family history you already know that the life I grew up in was a little different from most. I started driving my own boat at the young age of 5. Even though it was only a wooden rowboat I still should have been considered too young. However, in my father's world age didn't matter when it came to getting a job done.
My father was a man of the town and he went out almost every night. As a single parent he hired and fired lots of housekeeper AKA 'nannies/baby sitters,' but that's entirely another story. As I grew older I developed more 'too young to be driving techniques.' By the age of 10, I had graduated from a 5-knot rowboat to fiberglass speedboat that ran about 15 knots. I was, for sure a speed demon. During this time, we always had more than one car at the house. My father drove his Cadillac and then there was the second car that he never drove. It was just there!
Back in the old days we never locked our house or took the keys out of the cars. So therefore when I wasn't in my boat I was attempting to drive the car. I must admit those first couple of times it was a little hairy for sure. I never wrecked the car, but I have to say, 'I certainly came close on my occasions!'
As time went on and by the age of 14 I actually became a good yard driver. Our lot was pretty big boiling down to I could turn around, back up, and do doughnuts easily. Although I didn't know that they were called this at the time. I loved the way continuous circles made my stomach feel. My father must have known I was practicing my driving skill, but he never did say anything about it at until'..
Later one night the big black phone rang until it woke me up. I remember these old phones like it was only yesterday. If you turned the receiver up instead of down it reminded you of 'Mickey Mouse,' who at the time was a big hit on the television. As I staggered to what seemed like 'A ringing off the hook phone' I picked the heavy receiver up and listened. A strong voice spoke at the other end of the phone asked, 'Is this Judy?' Of course, since I was Judy, I answered 'yes.' The voice then said, 'Please come and get your father.' I replied, 'I'm only 14 years old.' The voice said, 'This is officer 'so and so,' and your father said, 'You know how to drive!' Part two is next week'.You aren't going to believe it, but as usual it's all so true!
Thanks for reading my reports!
