Driving Legally Without a License
Part Three
Now that I had graduated from "yard to road driver" my life changed immediately. My father dedicated the car that "no one drove" to officially be mine at least until I got old enough to get my license. I know you aren't going to believe this one, but I don't remember the brand. I do remember it having four doors and not especially being a big car. I think it was a "Buick." However, I do remember the color and it was "yellow!"
I know what you are thinking, "how the heck was she driving without a legal driver's license?" You must believe me I am going to answer this question. I just need to set the stage for the up coming events. The yellow car had a license plate on it like all the others at least this is what I thought. My father told me that I probably wouldn't be stopped; unless I was doing something I wasn't supposed too. He always stressed driving careful and slow. And that's exactly what I didn't do. I like driving fast and doing doughnuts every chance I could. After all this was the best adventure I had ever been on and I wanted it all!
As time would have it I finally got stopped doing something I wasn't supposed to be doing, which was "speeding!" As soon as the blue light came on, I found a place, and pulled over. I watched as the police officer made way to my door. He then leaned over and asked, "can I see you license?" Of course you know, because you have been reading that I didn't have a license. At the time I was just 15 years old and only had a learner's permit. However, what the heck, I handed that to the officer. He looked at the license and said, "Are you Captain Helmey's daughter?" I replied "yes." At this time a sort of kind smile came to the officer's face and he said, "You know I wouldn't have stopped you if you hadn't been speeding in the first place. All I knew to say, "Yes sir and I am sorry!" He let me go and never said anything about me not having a license. I didn't find out this till later. The license plate on the car was on a list of those that weren't supposed to be stopped unless the driver was doing something wrong.
As I drove off I couldn't help but wonder what the heck this was all about. However, I never asked, because I didn't want daddy to know that I had been stopped for speeding. From this point on it seemed that there might be too many people watching so I declared driving the car the speed limit, at least until I got my real driver's license. And as you can imagine that's entirely another story, which I will tell you about later….
Thanks for Reading! And Happy New Year!
