I flew to Kelleys Island this week, nothing but hard water (ice) as far as one could see,. The local islanders have been ice fishing since the first week in January with sporadic reports of excellent to not so good catches.
Now for the better news and the reason I am submitting this report at this time. The ice should be gone by the middle of March and by April the fishing will begin. April is a great month for jig fishing around the reef areas and shoreline. In May, post spawn walleyes are very abundant and is a good month for bigger fish. June, is a a good consistent month to catch walleye and the weather is generally good. The month of July is another excellent time to catch walleye. Walleye fishing in August is often slower and is the time to consider trying some yellow perch fishing. Then September, November, Walleyes are caught again with many trophies caught.
Yellow Perch fishing is good year round, especially during the fall. Perch fishing is a excellent way to spend a day on Lake Erie with family and friends. So get your fishing gear ready and make plans to come to Lake Erie for some great fishing.
