"Little Miss Judy's Believe It or Not!"
"Many Ways to Tie a Scarf!"
For those that don't know I haven't always taken people fishing for hire. Right after I graduated from high school I toured a few colleges with the intentions of attending. I looked briefly at a few in the Atlanta area, but it was a long ride definitely in wrong direction. Not only that, but I would have to leave home and not be by the ocean. During my time frame of "possible college goings" if you had a horse you took it with you. In my case, I didn't have a horse, which was a different story entirely. I had a boat and their wasn't any reason in taking it, because "no where to float a boat!" Believe me. I did ask! I never told my father that this was one of the leading factors for not wanting to attend an out of Town College. With this one detail hanging I decided to think about attending the local college, which was called "Armstrong State College."
My father came home one day from a fishing trip and he had met a wonderful person named "Al Hit." (I believe I am right!) This person owned and operated a school, which taught business and all that "it implied." At first it didn't sound too bad! However, with all things come a "few un-agreeable to me setbacks."
It was a college of sorts. Mostly women attended, because it was like a secretarial school. There were different degrees of schooling to which you could receive. My father wanted me to attend the "Executive Secretary School Part." Although I couldn't believe my ears I listened with a "hardened heart!" My father went on and on about how he visited the school, talked to the teachers, and walked through the classroom. The more he talked the more I was sure this wasn't the college for me.
I wasn't ever going to be a secretary nor did I care. Not only that, but all students that signed up for the college had to attend "Charm School!" The more daddy explained the worst it got at least from my stand point! My father already knew that to even get me to listen to such so called nonsense he was going to have to "be quick." It's not because you are going to be a secretary, which there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, its just information that you will learn will be "priceless" later on. According to Daddy it was direct information school. This meant the information you were taught was really just "typing, accounting, speed writing, and of course lets not forget "Charm!"
I agreed to at least a visit. Now that I think about it, "my father even though he was an "old salt, didn't graduate high school, but still attended college never steered me wrong! The school was only 2 years long and I could still fish on the weekend. After meeting Mr. Hit and touring the rooms of the college I decided to attend. At this point "Charm school" was still totally in the back of my mind, but possible skipping wasn't!"
The school was pretty much "Grass Roots" getting down to direct information needed for business. Typing was a class, which I already knew since I had taken it in high school. However, I always had to used lots of "white out tape" especially when carbon paper was involved. The reason being one error and all sheets under had to be erased! I took speedwriting, which was a form of short hand, but to me made more sense. Heck, they even taught me how to make coffee. At the time Daddy or I didn't drink the stuff so this went way over my head.
Charm school was very interesting. Yes, I could balance a book on my head, cross my legs properly, and so on. Heck, they even taught you how to dress properly. There were things besides making coffee that has always amazed me in regards to the college that I attended. The first thing is that I really did use most all of the stuff that they taught me especially in the accounting, speedwriting, and typing department. As far as charm school went I did certainly learn some valuable tools of the business trade. I was taught that there are at least thirty ways to use a scarf when trying to dress up or dress down!
The bottom line to this story is I did received my "Executive Secretarial Diploma and a Charm School certificate." My father was right as usual, "it was stuff I could use forever!" I know what you are thinking in regards to "Thirty Ways to use a scarf" and I'm not sharing that information, because that's entirely another story!
