March 7, 2010 UPDATE!
The Kona deep sea fishing right now is very good and it should get even better as springtime approaches. During March, the fishing in Kona is for Blue Marlin, Spearfish, Ahi, Wahoo and Mahi Mahi. Also, March traditionally is a big Blue Marlin month in Kona fishing. Not as many Blue Marlin as during the summer, but they average about 300 lbs! This March, the fishing in Kona has been excellent with good catches of Blue Marlin, Spearfish and Ahi being reported every day. On our last charter, Warren Woerner and Rick Pund from Nebraska wanted to catch billfish and release them to fight another day. They were both successful as Rick Pund tagged and released a nice striped Marlin and Warren did the same on a very large Spearfish. The day before, Kelly Manning from Australia chartered HighNoon for a Kona Marlin fishing charter. Kelly got his wish when a huge Blue Marlin hit the short corner lure as we watched and screamed out 600 yards of line on it's first run. After an hour fight, Kelly landed the biggest Blue Marlin of his life with a 498 lb Blue. (Note: See photo below!) The day before that, we had one of the bigger fish released as Dr. Rick Schwerditfeger from Nashua, New Hampshire caught a very nice 425 lb Blue Marlin which we successfully released after a 45 minute fight. Also, the Ahi (giant yellowfin tuna) are biting in pretty good numbers. Dan Gensemer, Sr. from Reading, Pa. caught the largest tuna of his life when he landed a 120 lb. Ahi in late February.
HighNoon is owner operated! Having fished Kona for 16 years professionally, I enjoy talking with each of my clients and then customizing their very own Kona fishing charter just for them. While some just want to go Blue Marlin fishing, some others are looking for smaller fish to eat....or a maybe just a bit of both. Some even want a combo trip including a snorkel stop at Captain Cooks which might take about 30 minutes out of their fishing day. One of the greatest things about Kona deep sea fishing is that every day of the year, Blue Marlin are found in the waters off Kona, Hawaii. Also, the calm sea conditions, great scenery, humpback whales and other aquatic mammals enhance your Kona fishing experience. Fishing every day helps me know where "the bite" has been and the best places to find that once in a lifetime fish for you.
In addition, the humpback whales have now arrived in good numbers and are seen on most of our charters now. On more than a few occasions lately we have stopped off at Captain Cooks monument while our anglers took a short break and snorkeled in the crystal clear waters of the best snorkeling in Hawaii. Here is a 498 lb Blue we landed for Kelly Manning of Australia during his visit to Kona, Hawaii.
