Another successful outing. This time with my daughter Lindsey and her friend Lauren who, after hearing so much about the tarpon fishing here, decided that it was time for a girls day out.
So the two of them along with my lovely wife packed up the sunscreen and cameras and off we went. Once at our hot spot, there was no time wasted as our first line in the water produced practically before the other two were set. Lindsey was first into the fighting belt and fought a frisky juvenile standing up for the whole 40 minutes that it took to bring the 1.14m fish on board. I was happy (and yes, just a little bit proud) to see her "bow to the king" so expertly, especially since this was her first time with such a big fish. Through gritted teeth she declared "No way I'm giving up before this fish does" and folks I'm here to tell you that she didn't!
Once the victory dance was over, I could feel Lauren chomping at the bit for her turn in the belt. After two good bites with spectacular leaps and runs that nonetheless failed to hook up solidly she finally got her chance when a monster latched onto her bait. "FISHON!" Again I was surprised to see this otherwise delicate young lady grab a hold of the rod and lean into the fight like her life depended on it! After several hard runs and a number (I lost count) of impressive aerial displays, Lauren finally gave the silver king enough slack to free himself to fight another day. It was a fitting end to a perfectly executed and hard fought battle. My respect to both participants. I know her son Ty will be watching his mommy's tarpon video with all his little buddies for some time to come.
As you can imagine this is exactly how I like to spend time with my family and friends, and after a long two months of work in the Arctic, it's good to be back on the Caribbean again. The forecast is for sunshine and fair seas and the bite is as hot as ever so leave the cold and snow behind and come join us if you can manage to slip away from your desk for a couple of days.
