Fishing Report for July 86, 2009 for Master Baiter's Sportfishing and Tackle

Weekly Puerto Vallarta Sportfishing Report, Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna on Track!
Puerto Vallarta, the town itself seems to be breathing a little easier these days. Mexican Nationals have taken over PV, filling the hotels, restaurants and shops now. Mexico is no longer at the forefront of the influenza pandemic and those enticed by cheap airfare / hotel packages are the lucky ones. The Americans are still not down in force, but High Season for Fishing is here amigos. Soon that Angler who´s been sitting in his living room watching ESPN, fantasizing about Black Marlin will be able to afford a sports vacation for less dinero than in a bunch of years!
The conditions are always fluctuating here in the Tropical Regions of Central America. This year the rainy season hasn´t been all that ¨Rainy¨. With what rains the mountains have seen naturally filter their way into the bay. This means finding blue water is the secret here, but not always easy to find. This is when the ever present trash line is a welcome sight. A band of sediment pushed in front of the murky brown water. Here Dorado can be caught inside the clear water side. Rooster Fish will also take small baits. Diamond jigs work well, whatever you have in your bag of tricks has a chance.
The last few days if you were fishing in the Buceras area, like Capt. Armando of El Duende, you could have came in with a nice 100 inch Sailfish like the one pictured. This was done in four hour trip and frankly this was a big surprise. This is Sharon Pagoria and 1st Mate Pancho before it was to be prepped for a skin mount. Remember, you can always mount your fish at Master Baiters…. Sounds like a new Tshirt…..
If you ventured out a little farther than Buceras, The point at Punta Mita with the buoys and abundant live bait is a reliable location that will produce positive results in a shortened day. Less fuel expense so those fuel challenged individuals are heading this direction, returning with full fish boxes. Roosters around the reefs in front of Sayulita as well. We´ve been seeing smaller Roosters in the 25 lb range and Mahi in the 30 to 50 lb range which will put a smile on your face. Secret here, shinny…. That´s it!
If you´re heading out to the El Morro or Marietta Islands, remember these are protected game reserves and you can´t get too close. But you can still fish outside of these areas and those are always fertile when the water temperatures rise. Roosters, Sailfish, Jack Crevalls about 35 lbs, Needle fish or Mexican Barracuda I call them, Bonito, Snapper, anything is possible on any given day. With all the natural bait that just hangs around the islands a nice eight hour day makes this all possible.
If you have fuel to burn, heading out to Corbeteña is a crap shoot. If the water is blue and clear, there are Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish, Marlin, Cubera Snapper, Wahoo and whatever else shows up for the day. It all depends on conditions and the rigs you´re running as to which species you´ll come back with. Open your mind and let the Guru Captain lead the way amigos!
El Banco, Same thing, twenty miles away. Some days the high spots here will be just thriving with baits, others that are all you´re come in with! The water temperatures play such an important factor in the ¨where abouts¨ of these fish. With the strong possibility of currents being miles out from El Banco, it may be a situation where you may need to head out and look for them. If this happens a good setting of 310 north, more often than not will get you into something, but you can´t be 100% sure! The water here has been a struggle with cold and dirty conditions moving in and out randomly. Yet if you can find some clear and warm spots, Black Marlin in the 500 lb range and Yellowfin Tuna in the 60 to 200 lb range are hungry if you can find them. Kits are always a great option and if you don´t have one on your boat, they´re not expensive and not high tech. But you do have to keep an eye on them. But they work and will work when nothing else will! Eighty bucks to about fifty dollars will get you one that will work and last. Money well spent.
As a whole the fishing grounds are still pretty vacant of Anglers. You can have these locations to yourself in these extra ordinary conditions for a fraction of what it cost last year, in some of the world name places you thought you would probably never be able to afford. The Marriott Casa Magna is one of the best hotels in Marina Vallarta. The Westin is the 5th highest rated hotel in Mexico and has a famous architect / Designer where his work is nicely shown off. Rooms that would be going for $300.00 a night right now are in the $70.00 usd range per night. Heck a motel six cost me more than that ten years ago! So if you´re considering a summer vacation consider PV, You´ll never see it like this again!
