Fishing Report for Week of July 1, 2007 For Master Baiter's Sportfishing and Tackle
Written by: Stan Gabruk
Welcome back to another mixed bag of fishing in Puerto Vallarta. I guess the best way to describe this past week would be with colors, Red, Green and Blue!
The seasonal rains have finally begun cleaning the air, the city and the streets here in Paradise, but it also means silt from the rivers run into the bay. This creates the "Green" water or dirty water conditions. Besides leaving a bad taste in a fish's mouth, it cuts down the oxygen levels in the water. For some fish, this is not a bother, Roosters, Snook, Dorado and Bonito for example will strike baits they can see. Yellowfin Tuna and Marlin, they're a different story all together.
Just out beyond the green water (agua sucio), most of the way to El Banco, you'll come across the color Red, as in Red Tide, the fisherman's frustration. When the Red Tide shows up there isn't much you can do about it, except wait it out or go elsewhere. Just another thing for the experienced Puerto Vallarta charter Captain to deal with. Many times you can boat fish in Red Tide, just like you can in the green water. But the odds are always against you.
Now you might be saying: Where is the Blue Water? Well, blue water these days seems to be a moving target. Crystal clear, perfect for Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna is out there, but you have to be willing to "go the distance". If you've go the bones or the inclination, it would behoove you to go past El Banco ten to fifteen miles to the South West and you'll find the Game fish we're famous for here in Puerto Vallarta. If you're looking for Blue and Striped, even Black Marlin, this is the place to be. The only sizeable Yellowfin Tuna have been boated in this area as well. This is the real secret this week, so gut it up, fill the tank and get your butt out there.
Our "Old Reliable" area, points north of Punta Mita are still producing game fish like a machine. Sailfish, Dorado, Jack Cravells, Torros and more are waiting for you now! Even with the full moon and dirty water, this area is a live with bait and game fish. No particular distance or location to direct you to, but it seems that if you're less than ten miles out, your chances of catching a Blue Marlin are fair…. No guarantees, but I think it would be worth your time if your fuel budget is running a little low……
Corbetena this week was buried under the Red and Green water, so not much news from this area as late. Earlier in the week when the water was blue, Striped Marlin were taking the bait. Kites have been working well in this area for both Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna. Don't forget about the shallows just south of Corbetena, they're loaded with some large Pargo or Cubera Snappers well worth the effort. More Options, what are you going to do?
Some place I haven't talked much of the last few weeks is El Morro and the Marrietta Islands. There has been a lot of quiet action in this area. Now remember, there are protected Coral Reefs in this area, so be smart and stay in the designated areas away from the Reefs. The Navy has been out there making sure there is no fishing around them. If you're snorkeling around this area, be sure you're with a permitted guide. Having said that, Roosters, Snappers, Dorado, Bonito and more are there for the taking. These fish don't have much of a problem with the green water, so go for it….
July 7, 2007 UpDate: Since I'm posting this fishing report a little late this week, I'm going to give you the latest and greatest.. the Dirty Water has left the area, Marlin are happening in a new location, approx. 14 miles north of EL Banco. Those venturing out that direction are finding Marlin up to 700 lb range. Many Tuna in the Area as well in the 140 lb range now…. Corbetena is off the hook with Tuna and Sailfish….. And Even the Marrietta Islands with El Morro are teaming with Yellowfin in the 40 lb. range.
Just like I always say, wait ten minutes, everything will change, twice!
Back to your normal "fishing report"… Hahahahahaaaa..
Master Baiter's is sponsoring graffiti clean up efforts here in Puerto Vallarta. This is not some big city wide effort with a huge budget or political motivations. Just a Fishing Charter Company doing its small part to make Puerto Vallarta a better, more beautiful place to live. So if you're driving around town and see a gentleman wearing a Master Baiter's T-Shirt with a bucket of paint, a brush and a bike, stop and donate a few pesos towards more paint and brushes. We're doing this out of our own pocket because we care. Remember Graffiti is not "Art", its vandalism. It's like a bunch of dogs marking their territory, but these "dogs" use paint, not urine. So the next time you cruise on in to El Centro, coming in from Nuevo Vallarta on the main road, notice how the bridge coming into El Centro has no Graffiti, when before it was covered in gang symbols. Or when you go past the military areas, notice what isn't there any longer. Zaragosa is a victim all the time, but we'll keep up the fight until they give up on it. You can come by the Marina Vallarta Store and make a donation for materials. A gallon of paint is two hundred pesos. If everyone in Puerto Vallarta donated 200 pesos, we could paint this whole town and make it look like new again. Please show you care with your donation. We've asked the Mayors office for financial assistance in the form of paint and brushes. We expect the city to become a willing partner, why not you?
Well that's about it for now, until next week, don't forget to kiss your fish!
