Hey, everyone.
Well, I hope everybody had a great Christmas and that your new year is filled with Big Fish. Personally, I had not been out since the 29th of November and was anxiously awaiting for the rivers to get back down to fishable levels. And finally after 3 weeks and flood stage conditions, they are finally back in shape. But here comes another rain front, with temps still in the high 40's. But I was lucky enough to get out twice this past weekend on the 29th and the 30th. One trip was a night trip with a friend and the other a charter with clients. Both trips were productive, but the one on the 30th was the most surprising. I caught what was my 2nd Tittabawassee River Steelhead on a jig and minnow. And the walleyes were cooperating as well on both trips. The Saginaw River has also been getting better daily, with more keepers being caught on the average, then in previous months. I'd like to see 2 more weeks of dry weather, but that don't seem to be in the cards. And if we get the 1 inch of rain predicted in the next 2 days, the fishing will go back in the tubes and it's back on the couch for me.
I also heard that many of the drainage's that would usually have ice fishermen going out from them this time of year are producing decent numbers of perch for guys fishing from shore. But the word "numbers" is more descriptive than the word "Size" is, with 10 to 15 keeper perch coming from a catch of 50 or more. It is indeed a weird start to the 2007 winter season. This is looking like a re-peat of last year winter with a little more precip added in. But like the song says, "The best I can do, is the best I can do". I'll report back if and when things continue to get better or the next time I can get out. Be safe, fish smart and tight lines. Capt: Dan.
