Fishing Report for Week of July 22 2007 for Master Baiter's Sportfishing and Tackle

Written by: Stan Gabruk

This summer is turning into the mildest I can remember. As a whole the temperatures have been very bearable. If you remember in my earlier articles, La Nina 75% of the time will follow an El Nino year, which we had last year. La Nina is the opposite of El Nino bringing cooler water temperatures. Surface temperatures are running in the middle of "normal" range, but deeper down the temps are cooler. This brings the pelagics to the surface and inland. Since weather patterns follow water temperatures, this would explain the pleasant weather along with the pleasant fishing conditions! Who knows if this condition will last, hot humid days here are inevitable.

With the cooler water temperatures, you'd expect the fishing to be "cool" at best. But that hasn't been the case. Like I was hoping early in spring this is bringing the Yellowfin Tuna and Marlin in to Corbetena.

Corbetena continues to be the place to be. Yellowfin Monsters have been boated here, but it's not the general rule. You can depend on boating a 150 lb Yellowfin Tuna though. Black Marlin are setting up camp and your chances of boating a Marlin over 300 lbs is in the 65% range and that aint bad amigo. Lots of Blue and Striped Marlin as well. Black, Blue, Striped Marlin right now all seem to be running in the same size range. Sailfish are always around the Corbetena area and nothing has changed here lately. With bait plentiful and a huge variety of game fish in the area, why venture out to deeper water!

El Morro this past week has continued to be a reliable spot for Dorado in the 35 lb. range, Rooster fish, Mackerel, Bonito, Needle fish (Mexican Barracuda), Snapper. It's wide open. The Princess Cruise Charters have an 8 Hr. fishing party that will take you as a single for $150.00 usd which will put you in the thick of it. Just contact me, I'll fix you up.

In shore fishing has been outstanding as you may expect. If you're looking for smaller Dorado or Mahi Mahi look for the trash line. The trash line is the floating line of sediment in the bay from the rains washing organic debris into the bay. One side of this trash line, you'll find the green, dirty water. On the other side, the clean water side, if you toss a small silver diamond jig with a single barb hook a foot or two inside the "trash", you could have dinner for an army that evening. This is a local secret, so keep it to yourself!

The Buoys in areas north of Punta Mita have been producing the normal fare of nice sized Mahi Mahi, you just have to find them. Sails are still being boated at will in high numbers. The surprising thing here is there have been Blue and Striped Marlin boated two to five miles from shore. This is very strange, soon we'll have Elvis Sightings boating Marlin in front of the Four Seasons….

You may have noticed that I haven't been saying much about El Banco these weeks and months of late. Usually at this time of year, early in Puerto Vallarta's fishing High Season; The Bank is usually firing like a machine gun. I was talking with Josh Temple (Capt of Conquistador) the other day about this and he mentioned to me that on a recent dive he spied Seiner nets all over the place. They're just "drifting" off the high spots and blanketed the entire area he was in. These aren't small sections of net either; "they're huge" Josh went on to say. Josh and I both feel this may be ruining the eco system at The Bank. There is no bait, birds, sighting of any fish of any size at the high spots or in the general area. Now I can't imagine that whole fourteen mile circumference of El Banco is ruined. But the only sizeable fish boated in the last few months from The Bank area has been in the Northwest end where the drop off happens. This is a chilling statement to make, and I'm not making it lightly. But this raises the questions, now what? Because I don't know! This Seiner fishing is the equivalent of Striped Mining in the States. But this is all happening where you can't see it. Our of sight, out of mind…… OK folks, I've love an idea or two so feel free to send them to me at: letsfish@mbsportsfishing.com or stanray55@yahoo.com . I guess we can always hope things will get better…..

On a bright note, Master Baiter's has been given four, five gallon containers of paint by the Mayors Office of Puerto Vallarta to support our continued efforts to eliminate graffiti in our fair city! I've also had many people come into the shop donating money at the Marina Vallarta store which is greatly appreciated. I even had a gentleman in on vacation donate a gallon of paint because he read my article online, so thank you Charles where ever you are. With the help of the city and private individuals we'll continue the fight. With a little help from citizen support we won't have to deal with this sort of social ill for much longer!

July 30th Update: The fishing is still off the hook! Large Marlin are still coming in around over 300lbs, The Yellowfin Tuna are in the Monster Range of 200 plus pounds. Bait is everywhere and plentiful. Dorados are getting larger by the day in The El Morro area and in the bay…. Red Snappers in-shore and happy people everywhere…. The High Season has started and boats are booking up for August like Crazy. Don't get caught behind and make your reservations now if you're planning on coming down to Puerto Vallarta. The Marlin Magazine guys were down this past week and they got some spectacular footage and plenty of material for articles to last the next year. See why they come down to PV every year……

That's it for now, until next week, don't forget to kiss your fish!
