Mosquito Lagoon Fish Camp Report

February and March was pretty good for fishing here in the north end of the lagoon. We did have a couple of little warm ups that made the fishing a little slow but overall fishing was excellent and still is. The wind always comes into play but this time of year you still have a great chance of getting into redfish when it blows. I would have to say though using my PowerPole Shallow Water Anchor with a remote does making fishing in the wind way easier than the ol' mud anchor days. Although there were a few days were we had to work hard for just a couple of reds the norm was just the opposite and some of the days even made the "all-time" memory banks. My charters hardly caught a trout all winter, we didn't target them so an 8 pounder was a nice surprise.

This last cold front dropped the water levels again. If you fish the Mosquito Lagoon much you have to love it. If you don't, plan to stay in the water you know, fish for trout in the deeper 2' -4' spots and reds along the drop-offs. That plan will keep you from having to dig the primordial muck out of your toenails later after you struggle to get your boat in floatable water.

As the water levels rise and warm up this week and on into April/May, finger mullet and pinfish will become more prevalent on the flats. We've already had a good top-water bite using the smaller Rapala Skitterwalks, also the subsurface small X-Rap have caught a few reds too. Live shrimp have been the bait of choice, but soft plastics and jigs come more into play as we go into spring.

If you're into fly-fishing, The National Fly Fishing Expo will be in Lakeland, Florida this weekend. www.nationalflyexpo.com has all the info. I'll be there Sunday checking it out, please say hello if you see me!

The Mosquito Lagoon Fish Camp will again host the Rebone Celebrity Tournament benifiting the Cycstic Fibrosis Foundation October 9th, 10th and 11th. Please call (321) 255-5010 for more information, "To Catch the Cure" for Cystic Fibrosis.

Keep fishing,

Capt. Brian Clancy
