Strange water levels in Mosquito Lagoon have all different species bunched up as the water is as low as I've seen since last winter. What a great thing! This causes our resident redfish to bunch up in schools in water that shows their tails and backs out of the water digging in the shallow grass flats of the Lagoon. Big reds are in their summer mode and are pretty easy to find as long as you know their favorite summertime spots. I went yesterday with 2 fellow guides and we got on a school of reds all 40 inches and larger. I ended up boating one of the tailing fish before they all spooked going just under 40" weighing 22 pounds.
Black drum are still on the flats but have also moved along the edges of drop offs where the trout are hanging. Saturday I had a very happy school of black drum boating 5 within an hour and a half before leaving them alone.
Trout are in excellent numbers taking pigfish where there's mullet present. It's pretty simple....find a mullet school that is getting busted on and fish it. Period. You should have no problem getting a mess of nice trout.
Tarpon are rolling all over the Lagoon in the open bays eating small pilchards. Try trolling 2 lines out with an 8-10 inch mullet once you spot them or toss out pinfish for a shot.
