A mostly chilly pattern through most of our "Florida" winter with cold water temperatures in the mid to upper 50's through mid February has now moderated as of late Feb with water temps rising into the mid 60's looking like an early spring pattern developing if no late cold snap appears here in the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon area. Redfish are stilled schooled up, making for fun sight fishing in the clear cool water, select size live shrimp can be the best sight casting bait this time of year. We have also been catching some good Reds along with Seatrout on live finger mullet on the grass flats when the schools are a little more spooky, making for a tough challenge to get them to eat a cast shrimp when they are already nervous. In that case we will set up shop close to cruising pods of Redfish, waiting in ambush with our baits already in place near the travel path of the fish. Such was the case a few days ago when new Edgewater residents Bob and Beth did a morning trip with me to Mosquito Lagoon, here Bob with one of the 2 Seatrout at 24" each he caught on live fingers near a grazing mullet school, the pair also caught a few more "slot sized" Trout*************

*********Along with a couple Redfish, Beth with her 26" spottail caught with a live bait out of a cruising school.

Chad, John, and Cheryl from New York State recently had a great fun trip with me on a cold morning catching 18 fish on the flats, 9 Redfish and 9 Seatrout most mid to upper slot size fish, Aunt Cheryl was trilled to catch the largest Trout of the trip, gloves and all*************

My Indian River Backcountry mixed bag trips are always fun easy catching lots of different species of saltwater fish, winter time Seatrout, school size Redfish, Sheepshead, Snapper, and Bluefish, as spring gets closer fun fighting Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish will be joining the party. Every trip out we see Dolphins up close and personal, and many different species of birds all through the waterway.
